I was in the Navy and my mum fixed me up with a date with a shopgirl who worked for her in Leeds. The girls name was Gaynor, unfortunately re-christened as Gay Norman by my Navy friends. For my part, I was excited by the opportunity to go dancing with Gaynor. For her part, she regarded me as an unwanted bad smell that she couldn’t wait to shake off. This took her all of ten minutes at the Mecca dancehall. There I was doing my thing to ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining’ and she was doing her thing with an unnamed stranger on the other side of the room. Never met her again and I like to think it was her loss and not mine but it’s probably not true.
