My first date was with a girl called Theresa who won the girl’s ‘twisting’ competition in 1965 at a church hall in Chapletown, Leeds. My claim to fame was that I won the boys competition at the same time. The next day we went on our date which was basically a meeting in the cloakroom and a stolen kiss. The next day I gave Theresa a plastic engagement ring from a lucky bag and she graciously accepted my invitation of marriage. Unfortunately she buried the ring in her garden so as not to tip off her dad and never found it again. The wedding was off and she copped off with my friend Andrew instead of me. Happy days!
