The problem is that we all know people in their twenties, thirties and fourties who act like elderly people and we all know people in their fifties sixties and seventies who act like kids.

At the same time we had a friend who had a home like a Doctor Who set with a most active social life particularly on the independent music scene and who climbed foreign mountains for a hobby. That friend was seventy-two years old!

Some people may even be insulted by the term mature dating or as it sometimes known, seniors dating. Heaven help the person who describes my mother as a senior. To her the only thing senior or mature about her is her body. Physical ageing is something that we have very little control over outside of weight, fitness and the usual lotions and potions.

To my mother and many other people like me and perhaps you, we prefer to judge and be judged by our actions and not our physical age.

There is a wonderful poem called an old woman’s poem which I can recommend and will certainly make you cry. The poem begins with the lines -

What do you see, nurse, what do you see,
what are you thinking when you’re looking at me?
A crabby old woman, not very wise,
uncertain of habit, with faraway eyes.

Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
when you say in a loud voice, “I do wish you’d try?”
Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
and forever is losing a stocking or shoe.

The poem goes on to say that they have all got it wrong because they see the physical shell and not the young and vibrant woman behind the eyes.

So, mature dating to me means absolutely nothing for the same reason. I refuse to be classified by age or appearance. In my head and actions I am still twenty-two.

I am 55 years old and found my partner on a mature dating website. Although we are happy, we have lots of single friends and relatives who will still not try online dating.

The question is – what is the problem? The answer seems to be that for the rest of the population, online dating is fine and dandy but for the older generation there is still a stigma attached.

The most often cited problem is that it smacks of desperation to join an online dating site. To me this is patent nonsense as online dating is simply the fastest way to meet new people and weed out those people you do not want to meet.

So why would you arrange to go out with mates, stress about what to wear and wonder whether you will bump into a like-minded and attractive member of the opposite gender.  Guess what? It’s a one in a thousand chance and very dispiriting if you don’t. In the same amount of time, you could have sat at home with a cup of tea and shortlisted ten people to contact anonymously with a view to going on a couple of dates.

The next objection to mature dating is that everybody will see your picture! Are you having a laugh is what I say. First of all there are millions of people in the UK and secondly you will certainly never use your real name on an online dating site. So what if someone did see your picture? They would also have to be on the same website as a member and therefore trying the same thing as you.

The next is that they are too fat, too thin, too short, too ugly etc to have anybody fancy them. Well here is the truth of the matter – there is someone out there for anybody and most of us are unhappy with our looks. The size 18 wants to be a size 12 and the size 10 wants to be a size 14! Back to me – I am absolutely nothing to look at. However, I am a cheeky so and so and my girl who is lovely looking loves my sense of humour above all things.

I guess that none of us thought we would end up on the 50 + dating scene. I certainly didn’t but here I am regardless.

Having been on this website and spoken to other people in the same situation, one thing seems clear. That is that they want to get a move on because as they get older, time seems to be speeding up.

This can cause friction because friends and relatives may believe that relationships are developing with an unholy haste. What they dont get is that faced with your own mortality, you do want to get a move on.

For those none northern types, mushy peas are marrowfat peas, soaked overnight and simmered for hours in a little sugar and salt. So why is the mushy pea the king of vegetables in my mum’s house?  It’s the fact that all the other veg are mushy but should be firm that wins the prize. At least the mushy pea complies with the trade description act and is what it is meant to be; mushy!

So is the mushy pea now dead? The answer is a resounding no despite the best attempts of Bachelors to popularise the tinned variety. My mum still does mushy peas the old fahioned way and now Nigella Lawson has jumped on the ‘real mushy peas’ bandwagon.
